Despite the transformation of Newcastle city centre and quayside, it has long been realised that there is a need to extend the opportunities and prosperity of the city to the surrounding communities. Nowhere else in the city have the effects of industrial decline and economic restructuring impacted greater than the west end of Newcastle. Here, the greatest renewal potential lies in Scotswood.
Located 3.5 miles west of the city centre, the Scotswood Masterplan site includes more than 44 hectares of land in public sector ownership. The site has a distinct character defined by steep south facing slopes and stunning views across the Tyne Valley. The seeds of renewal have been sown with community-based initiatives, successful refurbishment programmes and committed ongoing investment.
Preparations are underway for a new community of almost two thousand households, served by new schools, a new local high street and community hub as well as extensive space for start-up and growing businesses. In August 2007, outline planning permission was granted for the development of the new neighbourhood.
A Masterplan has been prepared. The Scotswood Expo will be the first phase of the Masterplan.
